SMA America, the U.S.-based subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, has strengthened its North American wind inverter family with the new Windy Boy 8000US model. In conjunction with the debut of the new inverter, SMA has also doubled its standard warranty on its entire UL-listed line of Windy Boys.
The 8,000 watt wind inverter expands SMA’s North American Windy Boy lineup, which consists of five models ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 watts.
Based on the Windy Boy’s exceptional reliability, the factory warranty has also been increased to 10 years, with the ability to extend to 15 or 20 years, providing system owners with additional security for their renewable energy project.
“The new Windy Boy 8000US expands SMA’s North American renewable energy product portfolio,” said Jurgen Krehnke, president and general manager of SMA America. “And, by extending the factory warranty, SMA is once again providing the protection system owners need for their investment in clean, renewable power.”
Combining the advanced technology present in the U.S. series of Sunny Boy solar inverters, the Windy Boy includes special firmware that permits direct grid-tied operation with a broad range of wind turbines. Its longevity is enhanced via SMA’s patented OptiCool active temperature-management system and rugged cast-aluminum outdoor-rated enclosure.
The Windy Boy 8000US features a CEC weighted efficiency of 96 percent, resulting in exceptional energy yields and is also certified to the UL 1741/IEEE1547 standard.
Designers can take advantage of the Windy Boy’s versatility. The wind inverter can be installed with a direct grid-tied connection or as part of a micro-grid in conjunction with the company’s Sunny Boy solar inverter, and Sunny Island battery inverter and management system, providing grid-quality power to remote locations.
