McCormick & Company, Inc. and Constellation Energy have entered into an agreement for developing a solar photovoltaic power system having 1.8 MW capacity at the McCormick distribution facility located at Belcamp, Maryland. Construction on the solar system is slated to commence by June and scheduled to be completed by late 2010.
The project will be financed by Constellation Energy, which will include construction and design of the system and also maintain and own the system for 20 years. The solar energy generated by the solar system will be sold to McCormick & Company. Through this agreement, McCormick & Company can save around $3.4 million in electrical energy costs.
The solar system will feature 8,372 photovoltaic solar panels fitted on the 363,000-sq. ft. rooftop of the facility. The energy generated through this system can power around 195 homes each year, offsetting 1,600 metric tons of CO2 , which roughly equals the amount of emissions released by over 300 vehicles.
Currently, Constellation Energy has around 25 MW of solar projects either under development or completed. The company has also allocated $90 million for funding solar system installations in 2010.
