Sandia, The Boeing Company, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Altergy Systems, Multiquip Inc., and others developed a novel mobile lighting system as a clean, efficient alternative to traditional technologies powered by diesel fuel generators. These small, portable lighting systems are used primarily by highway construction crews, airport maintenance personnel, and film crews.
The Hymera portable power generator from BOC is the first 150W hydrogen fuel-cell powered electricity generator on the market. It is a lightweight, clean and quiet off-grid power supply that is ideal for today’s high-tech, low energy technologies like LED floodlighting and for charging cordless tools on site. It is an environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional diesel or petrol powered generators and marks the start of a new age in off-grid power generation.
Three new complementary research projects will turn carbon from a pollutant into useful products that could help both industry and the environment.
Stacked sheets of graphene may be a promising material for capturing and storing hydrogen for future fuel-cell systems according to recent research at NIST and the University of Pennsylvania.
The winners of the fourth annual Green California Leadership Award will receive the awards at the Green California Summit at the Sacramento Convention Center. The summit takes place at the convention center from March 15th to 17th, 2010.
Danish industrial players have expressed a strong need for support in the process to push fuel cell and hydrogen technologies from the research and development stage into the commercial domain.
A £1.1 million project aimed at creating new platinum based catalyst layer designs for fuel cells has been awarded funding by the Technology Strategy Board. Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells Ltd is leading the NECLASS project (Nano- Engineered Catalyst Layers and Sub-Structures), and together with partners Qudos Technology Ltd, Teer Coatings Ltd and Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd, is developing novel micro-and nano-structured materials to enable a significantly increased oxygen reduction mass activity of platinum within the fuel cell catalyst layers.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $6.2 million in project funding to Ballard Power Systems under a four-year contract. Ballard Power Systems’ U.S. subsidiary, Ballard Material Products, was awarded $4.1 million for research to improve the durability of fuel cells. In addition, U.S. technology organizations that carry out fuel cell research with DOE funds will engage Ballard as sub-contractor.
Ballard Power Systems, New Flyer Industries, and ISE Corporation have signed an agreement to supply a fuel cell hybrid bus to SunLine Transit Agency in California that is powered by an FCvelocity(TM)-HD6 power module from Ballard. Currently, 20 buses that are similar to this 40-foot fuel cell bus are in operation in Whistler, B.C. This fuel cell bus, which has been delivered, will enter regular service in 2010.
United Technologies Corp.’s company, UTC Power, announced that its PureCell Model 400, a new 400 kW fuel cell system, has been certified by California Air Resources Board (CARB) to meet its latest emission standards, which is the most stringent in the U.S.
