The winners of the fourth annual Green California Leadership Award will receive the awards at the Green California Summit at the Sacramento Convention Center. The summit takes place at the convention center from March 15th to 17th, 2010.
Government organizations that attain environmental achievements in any of the eight categories are recognized through this award. Editor-in-chief of Green Technology, Carl Smith, commented that green innovation is taking place at all government levels and in communities across the state. Green projects that represent a wide range of accomplishments are highlighted through this award, Smith said.
Franchise Tax Board in collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory has developed an energy efficient cooling system for data centers and will be recognized through the Energy Innovation award. In the Waste Management category, the California Energy Commission and Gills Onions will be presented the award. It has developed a pilot Advanced Energy Recovery System that converts about 300,000 pounds of onion peels into biogas that is utilized for on-site fuel cells.
City of San Jose will receive the Water Management Award for establishing energy efficiency into a wastewater treatment plant. Approximately 100 million gallons of wastewater generated in eight cities are treated in this plant. The Climate Change Award will go to the County of Sonoma for its Energy Independent Program. This program helps owners of commercial and residential properties to finance water efficiency and renewable energy projects through property taxes.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Flight Projects Center, which achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, will be presented the Green Building Award. This building is the first NASA facility to receive LEED certification in the U.S. The Green Culture award will go to Lake County for developing a natural community park building. The Transportation Award and the Green Purchasing Award will be received by the University of California, Irvine and the City of Palo Alto, respectively.
