Campaign Calls on Toronto Hydro to Create Green Jobs

The Good Jobs for All Coalition will hold a press meeting at Toronto City Hall to introduce the Green Jobs for All at Hydro campaign on June 7, 2010. This campaign requires Toronto Hydro to increase its involvement to fill the novel potential for green energy, such as solar panels installed on public structures throughout Toronto and also create new jobs.

Speakers at the press meeting include Nigel Barriffe, a Communities Organizing for Responsible Development (CORD) member; Rosemarie Powell, main Green Change Collaborative representative; Amanda Ehrke, an electrician who installs solar panels; and John Camilleri, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1’s President.

The Steelworker Toronto Area Council’s president Carolyn Egan will moderate the press meeting. This launch is likely to witness the gathering of participants from the 41 unions, community groups and environmental groups associated with the Good Jobs for All Coalition.

As per the Green Energy and Green Economy Act 2009, homeowners, utilities and renewable energy companies can obtain provincial subsidies, by means of the feed-in tariff program, as long as they meet local domestic rules that necessitate 40-60% of the services and goods utilized originate from Ontario.

The Good Jobs for All Coalition requires Toronto Hydro to: make domestic procurement of green products and services a top priority in every activity; utilize the buying power of Toronto Hydro to attract green producers to Toronto; plan for expanding the role of Toronto Hydro in renewable power production in collaboration with public institutions including school boards, universities, hospitals and colleges; work with the Social Development Office of Toronto and domestic training organizations for ensuring equitable access as well as inclusion of coloured workers.
