Google Donates Solar Chargers to IMC

Google.org has given away 3,000 solar chargers valued at $216,000 to the worldwide relief efforts of the International Medical Corps (IMC).

Made by Solio, the solar chargers will be provided to IMC doctors among other personnel positioned in places where electricity access is limited. The solar chargers have the potential to hold charges for one full year and can power more than 3,000 devices such as GPS systems, cameras and cell phones.

In September 2009, the clean energy head of Google Bill Weihl indicated his discontent toward the absence of funding targeted at solar energy development. This recent donation of solar chargers helps Google promote renewable energy and solar power.

Google has made investments in two new solar innovations. One is a gas turbine powered by solar energy and the second one a novel mirror meant for solar thermal power systems. Google is hoping to reduce the expenses of solar thermal technologies by 25%.
