Northern Power Systems offers the Northwind 2.2 wind turbine. This wind turbine incorporates a unique permanent magnet generator coupled directly to a rotor with pitch control for each of the blades. This direct drive feature increases the performance level of the rotor and in turn the output. This wind turbine incorporates a FlexPhase power converter to tie in the generator output directly to the grid thus allowing easy grid transfer operations even with weak grid systems.
The power converter works in synchronization with a slow speed permanent magnet generator incorporated in the wind turbine for increased power output. The direct drive design of this Northwind 2.2 wind generator does not use a gearbox for working. The elimination of gearbox obviate the need for using a number of bearings in the gear contact areas normally used in a geared wind turbine, thus avoiding the expensive maintenance and saving on space. The onboard service crane equipped in this wind turbine allows easy servicing of the turbine during maintenance thus annulling the need for maintaining a mobile crane.
The Northwind 2.2 wind turbine offered by Northern Power Systems incorporates technological enhancements such as a FlexPhase power converter, a zero voltage ride through, an active and reactive power control and a patented PowerRouter control to meet the rigorous utility connectivity requirements. The advanced turbine controls such as fleet level monitoring, pitch control for individual blades, active tower damping control, and distribution control for turbine subsystem incorporated in this model maximizes the usage of system resources, increases the power production and minimize the system loads.
