VIASPACE Inc., a clean energy firm that grows Giant King Grass as a renewable, low-carbon energy crop, has increased the production capacity of Giant King Grass by leasing a surplus 34-acre land in Guangdong Province, China.
Currently, in addition to this new acreage, VIASPACE has 279 acres of land under cultivation for supporting its expanding requirements such as commercial production of campfire logs and Green Log fireplace, manufacturing biomass pellets and providing seedlings for planting purposes.
Produced from Giant King Grass, Green Logs are commercial renewable biomass/energy products. Manufactured fire logs signify a $400 million yearly market in North America. These environmentally-friendly Green Logs produce higher heat output in comparison with conventional logs.
The VIASPACE acreage serves as a nursery, providing enough seedlings for planting over 10,000 acres of novel crops annually. Currently, VIASPACE is in talks with prospective business partners functioning in India, Indonesia, Europe and China among other nations, where the biomass power plants of the company have been constructed or still in construction.
Moreover, the VIASPACE acreage can be used for producing biomass-energy pellets meant for co-firing along with coal in current coal-fired power plants to decrease CO2 emissions. By utilizing 20% Giant King Grass, co-firing can be attained with a slight modification of the current power plant. This process will help decrease the power plant’s net carbon emissions by 20%.
