Sempra Generation has completed the installation of the 8-MW capacity of solar panels at the company’s Copper Mountain solar facility. This facility has commenced producing renewable electricity.
Construction work on the 48-MW PV solar installation situated in Boulder City, Nevada, commenced in January. The company expects that this project will be operational by late 2010.
The total power generated from the 10-MW capacity El Dorado Solar plant and Sempra Generation’s Copper Mountain facility is currently being supplied to Pacific Gas & Electric (PG & E) through separate 20-year agreements. When completed, the two facilities will have a combined capacity of 58 MW. In fact, almost 1 million thin-film PV panels provided by First Solar in Tempe, Arizona will be utilized by the two facilities.
The CEO of Sempra Generation Jeffrey W Martin mentioned that they are hopeful of finishing the project by the end of this year. He also added that their Copper Mountain solar facility is currently in the process of delivering clean and renewable power for California residents, while simultaneously creating hundreds of job opportunities in the construction field. Around 300 construction jobs will be created by this clean energy project.
