SolarWorld Provides Solar-Powered TV Viewing Points to African Villages Lacking Electricity Access

As the excitement grows over the current World Cup in South Africa, over 2,000 residents who previously did not have access to electrical energy can watch the soccer matches at 36 solar-powered TV viewing points that were installed by solar manufacturer SolarWorld in remote villages of Africa.

SolarWorld’s Sun-TV project facilitates fans in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland to watch the soccer matches. In the long run, the stations can provide educational content such as information about HIV.

The solar-powered facilities are either integrated into existing facilities such as churches and community centers or situated in village squares. The high-performance solar panels of SolarWorld provide power to the viewing points that feature DVD players. Each viewing point, by means of a satellite, can receive educational, children’s and sports programs.
