Schindler Bags “Save Energy Now” Award for 2010

Schindler Elevator Corporation’s manufacturing facility in Gettysburg has been awarded the 2010 ‘Save Energy Now’ Award by the U.S. Department of Energy for Schindler’s commitment towards saving energy.

An energy assessment by Save Energy Now during 2009 has outlined several opportunities for saving energy, which Schindler actively took up. These energy-saving ideas given by the assessment has resulted in total cost savings of over $32 million from all the firms assessed along with total energy savings of 4 trillion Btu during 2009.

In the year 2009, an excess of 500 plants had applied for and were granted energy assessments done by a DOE Energy Expert or the Industrial Assessment Center in the university. The 2010 Save Energy Now awards under the Energy Saver category are being given out to 95 companies with total energy savings in excess of 7.5%, or over 75,000 MMBtu.

Schindler’s energy saving measures for 2010 include reducing the usage of packaging materials by about 10% by reusing, recycling and reducing the packagings and modifying its package designs for lowering the size as well as costs.

For taking advantage of energy tax credits, the Gettysburg manufacturing facility has already installed high-efficiency lightings in the main plant while new wash chemicals enable the operation of the wash systems in the plant at lower temperatures thus reducing energy consumption. Additionally, the installation of a new toluene solvent recovery system has brought down toluene usage by almost half.
