Cobalt Technologies, a company that commercializes biobutanol as a renewable fuel and chemical, has been named to the "30 Most Transformative Technologies of 2010" of the Biofuels Digest and ranked number one in the category of biobutanol.
Cobalt Technologies, which generates biobutanol from non-food feedstock including mill residues and forest waste, has been chosen from over 250 universities, companies and national laboratories.
The continuous butanol production system of Cobalt Technologies is based on technological advancements in the area of process engineering, bioreactor design and microbial strain selection, resulting in a low-cost, capital-efficient, highly productive solution. Recently, the company exhibited the transformation of lodgepole pine killed by beetles into a sustainable, low-carbon chemical and biofuel, which is currently undergoing tests in engines at the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory of the Colorado State University.
