SunEdison and Albertsons Activate Solar Energy Plants at Three Californian Stores

Albertsons, a company of SUPERVALU INC., and SunEdison, a provider of solar energy services and a MEMC Electronic Materials subsidiary, have activated rooftop solar energy systems at three grocery stores of Albertsons in Alpine, Oceanside and Carlsbad, California.

The solar power plants were financed by SunEdison, which will maintain and monitor the systems that are likely to generate over 12 million kWh of power during the course of the coming 20 years. This energy is sufficient to power over 1,100 homes annually, the equivalent of offsetting over 13 million lbs. of CO2 during the 20-year period or removing 1,300 vehicles from the road.

SuperValu, by means of a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA) with SunEdison, will buy the energy generated from the solar power plants to offset their energy demand from the utility grid. REC Solar, the channel partner, constructed the solar installations. Over the last two years, REC Solar has completed over 35 commercial solar systems meant for local and national retailers, totaling 16 MW capacity.
