Sharp Teams Up with NED to Construct 73 MW Solar Plant in Thailand

Manufacturer of thin film solar cells, Sharp Corporation along with Thailand construction firm ITD/ITE has signed an agreement with NED to construct a 73 MW solar power generation plant and to provide thin film solar modules and other systems required by the plant. DGA, a unit of Mitsubishi Corporation, owns 33.3% stake in power producer NED based out of Thailand. The expertise of Sharp in the mass production of solar cells helped it be a part of this massive project.

Sharp will jointly work with ITD/ITE in all the process from layout design to the construction of the plant. In addition to providing solar modules, Sharp will collaborate with local and overseas companies and offer a complete business model that takes care of details such as system design, equipment purchase and plant construction.

When compared with crystalline solar cells, thin film solar cells are ideal for bright sunny climates. Sharp is planning to supplement a part of the solar cell module supply from its new manufacturing facility at GREEN FRONT SAKAI in Sakai City, Osaka.

The Kingdom of Thailand gets ample solar radiation all through the year. The government is planning to increase the quantity of recyclable energy to the tune of 20% of total power demand by the year 2022. The construction of the new plant is anticipated to commence in July 2010 and expected to be functional by the end of 2011.
