SunEdison, a MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. division, has partnered with Samco Solar, a Samco Machinery Ltd. division, for producing racking equipment meant for its solar projects in Canada. This partnership is expected to result in the creation of over 100 green jobs in Ontario.
Since the year 2008, Samco has witnessed a decrease in its automotive sales of 63%, which led to the decline of its labour force of 37%. This novel agreement with SunEdison will help generate an increase of 25% in the workforce of Samco.
Already, work on the retooling of the Samco facility has started. By utilizing the proprietary design of SunEdison, which has been utilized globally on more than 300 rooftops, the very first solar racking equipment is expected to be produced by September 2010. Furthermore, SunEdison expects to export solar racking systems to the market in the U.S.
This initiative will facilitate SunEdison to exceed or meet the local content needs for its commercial-scale rooftop solar PV projects, outlined in the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program of Ontario that necessitates 60% of the solar systems utilized in its solar projects to be manufactured domestically by 2011.
