GEA Anticipates $22.5 Billion Economic Output for Nevada’s Geothermal Industry

The GEA (Geothermal Energy Association) anticipates a $22.5 billion economic output for the geothermal industry of Nevada over a 30-year period. These facts were prepared by GEA in expectation of its forthcoming GEA Geothermal Energy and Utilities, Co-ops and Public Power Workshop located in Las Vegas.

Over the next few years, Nevada could well become a leading producer of geothermal energy according to the current trends in production and growth. There are around 86 geothermal power plants in Nevada that are either in the planned or developing stages which add up to the overall energy portfolio of Nevada of 3,686.4 MW, enough for powering 2.6 million homes.

Additionally, 14 geothermal power plant facilities are in the final development stages and would create an estimated 1,400 construction jobs for the state of Nevada. Already, the Department of Energy awarded $73.6 million in funding to 20 recipients in Nevada through FY 08 appropriations and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This ARRA funding into the geothermal industry of Nevada is likely to generate around 1,100 jobs in Nevada.
