Tata BP Solar to Increase Capacity of Photovoltaic Cell Production

Tata BP Solar, which is a joint venture company between BP and Tata Power, is all set for increasing its PV cell manufacturing output to 180 MW from 84 MW at its facility in Bangalore, India.

The company also announced that its 1-MW project in Delhi, India and the 3-MW project in Maharashtra would become operational during this year. This information was revealed by company officials at the Solarcon 2010, an event held at Bangalore recently in relation to solar energy.

The increase in production capacity for the Bangalore facility while commissioning two other solar projects is part of the company’s overall expansion plans. The company exports almost 70% of its production but equally expects an increase in the domestic market share. Under the solar mission, domestic sales are anticipated to improve.

The Solar Mission comprises certain guidelines in relation to solar power units, with a 20,000-MW power production target by 2022. Under the first phase of this solar mission, there is a government approval for grid-connected solar facilities to the extent of 1,100 MW capacity and off-grid plants to the extent of 200 MW capacity till the year 2013.
