Renewable Energy Makes Dallas the Second Largest Green Power Buyer

The City of Dallas, with an objective to save taxpayers money and to lead the ecological front, has signed a three year electricity agreement with TXU Energy an electricity retailing company in Texas. The $7 million per year contract will allow the city to receive 2.2 million MWh of electricity to power more than 800 of its city’s facilities such as water pumps, street lights and traffic signals.

The newly signed agreement with TXU Energy supports a number of energy effective projects thus making the company eligible for Energy Efficiency Rebate funds. More over executing such energy efficacy projects will allow the city to save additional money even after the termination of the contract. During the last five years the city has taken steps to cut down on its total energy spent on managing the existing facilities by five percent every year. The city could achieve this by upgrading its lighting systems, introduction of solar panels where necessary, by introducing power efficient heating and air-conditioning systems and by deploying automated power control systems where possible.

The signed contract will also enable the City of Dallas to receive 40% renewable resources in the shape of Green-e Energy renewable energy credits (RECs) produced from Texas wind power farms. The Green-e Energy certificate guarantees the purchase of energy credits from wind firms that meet the requirements of new renewable energy. The 40% renewable energy allegiance will make Dallas the second biggest buyer of green power in the country.
