Tata Power, an Indian company, is striving to tap for hitherto unexplored geothermal sources that can yield geothermal power around 10.6 GW of electricity which is five times more than the combined production all types of renewable energy in India.
The company is already into the generation of renewable energy power with a production capacity of 200 MW situated in three Indian states such as Maharashtra with 100 MW, Karnataka with 50 MW and in Gujarat with 50 MW. The company has received orders for setting up of additional wind turbines of 150MW capacity from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Prasad Menon, TATA Power’s Managing Director, speculated that the production of renewable energy in India will achieve the growth only with the stringent realization of renewable energy purchase compulsion and introduction of Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) process.
