Qualibou Energy to Start Geothermal Plants in St. Lucia in the Caribbean

Qualibou Energy, a renewable energy company, has inked a 30-year agreement with the government of St. Lucia to harness sufficient geothermal energy for powering the island. As per the agreement, Qualibou Energy will establish geothermal plants in St. Lucia Island in the Caribbean.

This could help the Caribbean island in becoming independent from foreign energy. Smaller volcanic islands present in the Caribbean have long been known to have the potential for generation of geothermal energy.

Since volcanoes facilitate heat from deep inside the earth to come up to the top surface and transmit that heat to water, the Caribbean islands present vast opportunities in terms of tapping geothermal energy. Recently, the discovery of geothermal reservoirs was made in the Caribbean islands of Nevis and Saint Kitts.

The agreement of Qualibou Energy with the St. Lucia government will help power the island nation on its own. The overall installed capacity of all the geothermal plants put together is expected to be 120 MW. The geothermal plants are expected to be completed by the year 2015.
