Vestas, a wind turbine giant, has selected Oregon as its new headquarters. The new U.S. headquarters is being designed by Gerding Edlen, a specialist in developing LEED-certified properties across the country.
Work is going on towards transforming an old historic warehouse into an office with an area of 172,000 sq. ft with an additional area of 22,000 sq. ft. that completes the building with gardens and an eco roof terrace.
This will become the largest solar energy array that is roof-mounted in the entire Portland district. The estimated cost of this project is approximately $66 million that includes a rainwater collection system, raised-access flooring, insulated exterior walls, thermally insulated windows, along with a multi-story atrium towards providing light and reducing the overall energy usage.
With this, Portland, Oregon will continue its march towards developing itself as one of the top green tech hubs in the U.S. However, a crucial point in this project is that given Vestas’ specialty in wind business, wind turbines would have made a more logical fit than solar panels.
