ORPC Generates Tidal Energy in Eastport, Maine

ORPC (Ocean Renewable Power Company) has successfully generated tidal energy in Eastport, Maine. Tidal energy generation by using the tidal currents of Cobscook Bay was celebrated by the Governor of Maine John E. Baldacci along with members of the local community and state officials.

For this purpose, ORPC is partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard and the University of Maine while receiving financial support from the U.S. DoE (Department of Energy) and Maine Technology Institute. The state of Maine is currently on the fast path towards energy independence. Maine’s ocean energy industry is already producing tangible results along with an increase in private investment.

This tidal project marks an important step towards Maine’s efforts in promoting clean and renewable power development. For the purpose of grid-connection by 2011, ORPC has been advancing the underwater power systems, as per company officials. Generation of renewable ocean electricity has its focus on offshore wind energy and tidal energy. Maine’s success in achieving its renewable energy targets will depend largely upon strong private and public partnerships in the energy sector.
