New Geothermal Plan Formulated for Rotorua

Rotorua District Council and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council are working together for formulating steps for allocating the geothermal resources of Rotorua following a workshop that was conducted recently.

The two councils have been working and collaborating with the neighbouring council named Environment Waikato for exploring the possibilities in terms of the accruing gains from the geothermal energy in that area.

The Regional Council is in charge of managing geothermal use, protection and allocation for usage in all the 25 systems in the Bay of Plenty. The workshop conducted by the councils also convened to finalize an in-depth overview of future methods meant for geothermal use.

Rotorua’s existing geothermal plan needs a review as the equilibrium stage has been reached. Since the geothermal field represents a key issue in Rotorua, a sound geothermal management is needed by way of a thorough understanding of the complex systems and the interplay between heat, water and rock.
