Temples in Punjab to Install Solar Lights to Save on Recurring Energy Costs

A new Bhagwan Jagannath temple, under construction in Ludhiana Punjab, is planning to install energy saving solar lights. The solar systems are already installed and used by many educational institutions and now the temples are looking for means to harvest the clean energy and save on energy costs and have received a plan amounting to one crore for the purpose.

According to Pardeep Dhall, Shree Geeta Mandir Shani Dham’s general secretary, use of solar lights is the right step to offer a pollution free and serene environment to the devotees. He added that use of solar lights cuts down on their power bills and lessened their reliance on grid connected electricity. He concluded saying that the temple wanted to replace all the existing ordinary lights with solar lights and plans are on for earlier implementation.

In Punjab educational institutions such as the Punjab Agricultural University, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and some of the convent schools have installed solar power facility. Even some of the residential locations are fitted with solar power but installation of solar lights in temples has not yet fructified because of the high cost factor.
