Covanta Energy Joins Crane & Co. for Transforming Fiber Wastes into Clean Energy

Covanta Pittsfield LLC has partnered with Crane & Co. towards converting waste fibers into renewable, clean energy.

Covanta Pittsfield is Covanta Holding’s subsidiary and is a global player in the renewable energy sector.  Covanta Energy has received the U.S. DOE’s Energy Innovator Award too.

Covanta Pittsfield is operating the company’s Pittsfield Resource Recovery Facility, which produces energy from waste. This facility is located adjacent to the Crane & Co. facility that makes use of the steam that is delivered by Covanta Pittsfield for powering the manufacturing processes of Crane along with providing heat for the facilities of the paper company Crane.

Covanta Pittsfield has received approval from the MassDEP (Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection) for moving forward on this demonstration project towards beginning the processing of fibers that happens to be a byproduct in the process of paper making. Upon the successful implementation of this pilot project, Covanta Pittsfield would be processing around 10 gallons of the diluted waste fibers every minute into energy. Annually, this would represent approximately 5 million gallons. The remediation effort is expected to consume a time period of 10 to 13 years.
