Peter Corroon, Mayor of Salt Lake County, has announced the details of the proposed solar power installation planned for the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. Corroon, who is expected to be the democratic gubernatorial candidate and a long time supporter of solar power, has signed a solar panel to mark the occasion of inauguration.
The rooftop set up planned for the Salt Palace Convention Center is designed to produce 2.6 MW clean power to meet nearly 25% power requirement of the convention center. The installation planned at a cost of $10 million will cover the full 600,000 square foot roof area of the convention center and will have 11,319 solar panels that are capable of generating 3,330,000 kWh of clean power annually. The installation will receive around $5.7 million from federal funding while the balance will be met from private resources.
The project planned as a public and private venture will empower the private company to complete the project installations. The private company will be allowed to sell the produced power to the county at the same rate offered to Rocky Mountain Power, a power utility company in the county. The county is vested with an option to purchase the entire solar installation system at a price of $800,000 within seven years. The construction of the project is likely to commence during the end of the current year and will be completed during next year.
