Snohomish PUD Receives $10 Million from DOE for Tidal Energy Project

The Snohomish PUD (Public Utility District) has received a $10-million funding from the DOE (Department of Energy) towards a tidal energy generation project.

The utility, located in Everett, Washington, has mentioned that it will be using the money towards establishing two large tidal turbines in Admiralty Inlet’s bottom, some 200 feet below Puget Sound’s surface. By the year 2012, these tidal turbines are expected to generate enough electricity for powering approximately 700 homes.

Simultaneously, the Snohomish PUD is on the lookout for a possible tidal energy project at the Deception Pass location while the Navy is planning for a tidal energy project in the Admiralty Inlet location which is the strait between the Olympic Peninsula and Whidbey Island.
