LTU and ETC Team Up for Alternative Energy Research in Sweden

Luleå University of Technology and Energy Technology Center (ETC) in Piteå is part of a Nordic large investment in climate, energy and environment at a total of 50 million euro. For LTU and ETC the program area focuses on thermal gasification of biomass. Nord-Syngas is the name of the project selected in fierce competition.

A strategically important project that strengthen the ongoing efforts within LTU / ETC / Solander Science Park and Bio4Energy. And I am also glad to get started on projects with VTT and SINTEF, said Marcus Öhman, a professor in the Department of Energy Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Professor Marcus Öhman, Department of Energy Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.

Top Research Initiative (TFI), is an investment in climate, energy and environment that the Nordic countries started. It will run for five years and consists of five main sections, with a total budget of 50 million euro. "Sustainable Bio fuels" is one of those sectors that apply LTU and ETC. It is a program that deals with user-driven research to treat raw materials, processes and end products. LTU will be working to characterize the biomass behaves in the gasification process (particular characteristics of ash) and system modeling of gasification processes while the ETC will work with the modeling of gasification processes and characterize how the bio-fuels react in the gasification environment.

Four projects out of totally 31 applications were selected by a group of international experts. Nord-Syngas is the name of the research project related to LTU and ETC.

It is basic research focused on thermal biomass gasification, a technology that has great strategic importance in the Nordic countries, especially in Sweden and Finland. Nord-Syngas will be implemented by a consortium in which also Finland's VTT Technical Research Centre and the Norwegian SINTEF, Scandinavia's largest independent research organization, is included.

Cooperation with the prestigious research institutes VTT and SINTEF will strengthen the cluster around the ETC and LTU, and consolidate the Nordic region's role as a world-leading region for biomass gasification, "said ETC's CEO Rikard Gebart.
