Oceana, a leading environmental group, has forecasted that the U.S.’ eastern coast has great potential of wind energy. As per the ocean conservation group, offshore wind energy could be providing half the energy demands of U.S.’s eastern coast. Oceana has suggested that 13 coastal states that include Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey could be generating 127 GW of energy.
Currently, the U.S. produces 35,000 MW of energy towards powering approximately 28 million homes. It has also been suggested that wind power sector development in this region might lead to the creation of 200,000 new jobs.
In the U.K., recently, the world’s biggest offshore wind farm was inaugurated. This wind farm is anticipated to generate 300 MW of energy while housing 100 wind turbines, an equivalent of powering in excess of 200,000 homes. The U.K. currently produces in excess of 5 GW of electricity that has its sourcing from wind farms, an equivalent of powering 3 million homes, approximately. The UKERC (UK Energy Research Centre) has published a report, warning of the rising expenses of offshore wind energy generation. At the same time, this report is also cautiously optimistic about wind energy playing a bigger role in the future of U.K.’s carbon zero targets.
