The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has introduced a three level power production plan to generate 5,000 MW of electricity within the state in the subsequent five to six years period.
The program launched by the Chief Minister of the state Omar Abdullah will be assisted by an Independent Power Producers (IPP) and the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). The announcement was made by the Chief Minister in the 60th State Power Development Corporation’s (SPDC) board of directors meet.
Omar expressed the intention of his government to create Private Public Partnership (PPP) type of power projects in the state in an indigenous manner with the aid of IPP and NHPC. He reiterated the need for the increased power production for development of industrialization and economy of the state. He cited that the high level hydro-energy potential of the state offers good scope for more hydro-power projects and explained the proactive policies of the government to provide new scope for power generation programs.
Omar emphasized the need to hasten up the execution of a range of power development strategies by the SPDC. He asked SPDC to find out the options for starting the Karthai-I and II projects concurrently to produce around 1,000 MW of electricity within the following five to six years time. He wanted to speed up the 93 MW New Ganderbal Hydro-Power Project, the 1200 MW Sawalakot Power projects and 450 MW Baglihar-II project to avail the assistance extended by the Central Government for such projects.
