MeyGen to Construct 400 MW Tidal Power Project in Scotland

MeyGen, a tidal energy syndicate consisting of International Power, Morgan Stanley, and Atlantis Resources, has entered into a deal with UK-based Crown Estate to construct a tidal power project with a capacity of 400 MW, in the Inner Sound in Pentland Firth of Scotland. The project, which is marked as one among the largest tidal power projects in the world can generate energy to serve about 400,000 houses.

The Chief Executive Officer of MeyGen, Dan Pearson commented that the project would be considered as his company’s major tidal energy project in the region. Inner Sound is the suitable place for the project as it has quality resource and is located close to the area having grid connection points.

The construction on the tidal power project is proposed to take place in phases between the approval of the planning authority and 2020. Initially, an array of limited turbines will be installed to evaluate the impact of the turbines on the surroundings. Based on the results, the complete plans for future phases will be informed. Atlantis Resources is supplying the technology for the project. During the initial phase, MeyGen has committed to provide 10-MW energy to the subsidiary of TGL Rolls-Royce, Rolls-Royce Group PLC.
