The GSA (Geological Society of America) commemorated the completion of a 65 kW solar energy unit built on top of its Boulder headquarters, which is to provide 35% of the annual energy needs and also reduce CO2 emission to the tune 160,000 lbs per year.
According to Jack Hess, GSA Executive Director, the society was indebted to the funding provided by the City of Boulder and Xcel Energy for this renewable energy project. The building would be operating totally on renewable energy, both solar and wind, by 2011 January. He was also appreciative of the solar system installer, Bella Energy, for their professional work and adeptness.
Bella Energy’s COO, Andrew McKenna, remarked that their company found it exhilarating to work along with the GSA. He mentioned his family’s close ties with GSA in the past, and stated that his company would help in contributing to the electrical costs and thus make headway in its environmental leadership work. Bella Energy, established in 1982, has been specializing in medium and large sized solar electric systems, providing Colorado communities with renewable energy.
The GSA, instituted in the year 1888, with 22,000 associate members from various fields, such as industry, government and academia, from around 97 countries, has encouraged research on social, planetary, life and earth, promoting public exchange of ideas on geoscience issues through its many publications, meetings and programs.
