Copperbelt Energy, a company that supplies electricity for mines in South Africa, has declared its intentions to build Kabompo hydro power plant, to be located in the northwestern province with an investment of around USD 120 million.
According to Hanson Sindowe, Copperbelt’s Executive Chairman, the building plans of the 40 MW power plant have reached the advanced stage and the construction is expected to begin by March 2011. He added that the feasibility studies performed during July 2010 did not show any critical problem to hinder the implementation of the project. He said that the company is in the process of getting funds for the project and naming a manager to source funds to execute the project constructions. He explained that the proposed hydro power plant will include a 48 meter high dam, which will hold the water spread over 32 square kilometers. According to him the ecological impact related evaluation is underway which needs explanation on few issues before the assessment is submitted to the study and consent of Environmental Council of Zambia.
The project which is expected to commence its constructions in March 2011 is anticipated to displace around 29 households and the company will provide them with concrete houses in an alternative site. The company has signed an agreement with Zesco Limited, a local power utility company, to provide electricity to the project site. The company is planning to construct its power transmission lines soon. The project has drawn the attention of a number of international development banks that have shown interest in financing the project.
Dr Eustern Mambwe, North Western Province’s Permanent Secretary, while appreciating the spirit of CEC management and its commitment towards the project assured the support of the province for the project.
