Morgan Solar, a start-up company based at Toronto, has received the inaugural Canadian Energy Innovation Award (CEIA) for its teaming work with SUNLab at the University of Ottawa. The Association of Power Producers of Ontario (APPrO), Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), and Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) has jointly sponsored the award, and a group of experts from the Ontario electricity sector has chosen Morgan Solar for the award.
Morgan Solar received the award for its innovative Sun Simba concentrating solar panel. The panel incorporates Morgan Solar’s Light-guide Solar Optic (LSO) technology for which the patent is pending. The cost-effective solar panel incorporates high-efficiency solar cells to improve the power efficiency of the panels. The new panel which has the highest reported electric power conversions is compact in size and cost effective for use. SUNLab of University of Ottawa with its dedicated research lab aided in the designing of high efficiency solar cells used in the system. The guidance and validation offered by the SUNLab has helped the company to introduce the Sun Simba expertise in its solar product and quickened the time required for the launching of the product. The panel is reported to have 28-31% sunlight conversion efficiency.
Nicolas Morgan, Morgan Solar’s VP of Business Development, said that his company has set a pushy goal to produce competitive solar energy comparable with other power generation expertise. He added that the winning of the award while bringing honor to the company also supports the efforts of the company and brought the company nearer to its goal of bringing out a revolutionary energy product technology.
