Tibet to Build 510 MW Hydro Power Station Across Brahmaputra River

The Brahmaputra River arising from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China will have its large power station called the Zangmu Hydropower Station in the middle course of the river in Gyaca County, Lhoka Prefecture, located in an autonomous region of Tibet. The river with its vast gap between the lowest and highest points and with heavy water flow provides copious water resources required for power production.

The Zangmu Hydropower Station projected with an investment of around 7.9 billion yuan will install six 85 MW power generation units to bring the total power generation capacity to 510 MW. The first of its kind hydropower station in Tibet is expected to commence power production with the completion of its first unit in 2014. The power generated from the hydro power station will reduce the power deficiency problem of central Tibet.

The power generation station is located around 325 kilometers off from Lhasa in Tibet. The hydropower station is anticipated to reach a maximum power generation capability of 2.5 billion kWh. The station in addition to generating electric power will also facilitate in reducing floods during the rainy season and help in increasing  irrigation. Currently Tibet has a few number of hydro power stations with power production capability of around 100 MW. The new power station will allow Tibet to boast about having a power station with more than 500 MW power generating capability.
