International Battery, a designer, developer and manufacturer of energy storage systems (ESS), and large-format lithium-ion rechargeable cells, batteries, declared that it has obtained $800,000 as funding from the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA) to design, produce and assess and examine an 800 kWh bulk energy storage system (BESS), which can be increased to one megawatt.
PEDA has extended the funding to promote the use of clean energy in the state, to kindle its economic growth and to create more jobs in an environment friendly sector.
The proposed bulk energy storage system is expected to showcase the benefits of utilizing large-format lithium batteries for consolidating the produced renewable energy and to extend Smart Grid support. The system will incorporate large-format lithium batteries, an inverter, and a battery management system besides a control and communications system provided in a 40-foot transportable container. The company has announced its plans to associate with a leading inverter manufacturing company in the project. The company has already commenced the initial design work of the 800 kWh system and intends to make it available for preliminary testing in the second quarter of 2011. The company intends to erect the BESS unit at a chosen location where it can be connected with an onsite clean energy production sources and the grid. Unlike other battery products the battery cells utilized in the project are manufactured utilizing a water-based development instead of organic solvent chemicals.
Dr. Ake Almgren, International Battery’s President and CEO, thanked PEDA for the funding which helped the company to undertake the project. He added that the project will showcase how large format prismatic battery cells can be used in constructing large lithium-ion storage systems with high level energy storage facility offering a number of operations such as frequency regulation, time shifting, wind ramping and solar smoothing.
