Draka Wins Subsea Power Cabling Deal for Baltic 2 Offshore Wind Projects

Draka Holding has proclaimed that the company has received a contract of array cabling from Visser & Smit Marine Contracting for the € 23-million Baltic 2 offshore wind project.

The company has to provide the 36kV subsea power cable to a length of 95 km for the project in two deliveries. Draka will supply the first set during the second quarter of 2012 and the final set during the first quarter of 2013.

Apart from this contract, Draka has bagged deals for two offshore wind projects, which include the subsea power cables supply contract for wave and tidal energy project in Scotland and a design deal for a third field.

As per the deal, Draka will also supply the installation accessories. The company’s specially designed and engineered subsea cables and accessories will provide a superior installation system for Visser & Smit.

The Baltic 2 offshore wind project is located in the Western Baltic Sea, north of Rugen Island. The project will occupy a land of about 27 square kilometers. The 288MW project will feature 80 numbers of 3.6MW capacity wind turbines. This project, which is administered by EnBW, is the second commercial offshore wind project being developed in Germany. At full capacity, the plant can generate power to meet the energy demands of over 340,000 houses and can eradicate the emission of over 900,000 tons of CO2 annually. The initial maritime construction works are scheduled to start in the beginning of 2012 and the farm will commence production in 2013.
