Pakistan to Focus on Local Wind Turbine Development

Pakistan’s Engineering Development Board (EDB) said that there is a need for manufacturing wind turbines locally in the country. As the technology is changing faster, it will not be easy for the local manufacturers to cope with the latest trend, said the CEO of EDB, Aitazaz Niazi. However, the manufacturers now have the ability to start and proceed in the direction of wind turbine manufacturing, he noted.

A local manufacturing company in Pakistan has produced wind turbines and has started building a pilot project to generate electricity from wind power. The pilot project is being set up at Jinnah Avenue.

The Board has established a strategy called National Engineering Exports Development Strategy, to abandon import of locally manufactured machinery.  EDB has planned to host an international workshop on machinery for wind turbine manufacturing, in 2011. It has also evaluated the current potential of the local manufacturers to change to advanced technology and expand the capacity.
