State Government in India Promotes Clean Energy

The government of Tamil Nadu in India has mandated for replacing coal fuel usage with renewable energy, to promote clean energy. In addition, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has imposed obligations to purchase renewable energy to focus on renewable energy usage in industry.

At present, the state of Tamil Nadu has wind energy capacity of 5,400 MW, in addition to a potential capacity of 5,530 MW.

The Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin, stated that private power firms are developing renewable energy plants to produce 18,140 MW of power with an investment of approximately Rs. 91,000 crore, over the coming 3 to 5 years. He noted that the government is promoting clean energy as the coal resources are limited. Moreover, the state government has planned to include additional bagasse-based power capacity of 183 MW, investing Rs. 1,126 crore.
