Gamesa Announces Collaboration to Develop Offshore Wind Turbine

Gamesa has partnered with research institutions and some companies to develop an offshore wind turbine with a capacity of 15 MW by the year 2020. The project, called Azimut Offshore Wind Energy 2020, involves 22 research institutions and 11 companies that are specialized in offshore wind power technologies.

The collaboration is focused to bring out the know-how needed for the development of a wind turbine, on a  large scale, using Spanish technology. The total investment for the project is EUR 25 million over the coming four years. The investment is shared by all the participating companies.

The wind turbine project is scheduled to be finalized in 2013, and the development is scheduled to be completed in 2020. For the project, Gamesa will manage the wind energy capture related activities, while Alstom Wind will take care of the marine substructure and structure segment. Iberdrola Renovables will manage the integration of wind turbine and the grid, Acciona Windpower will handle the electricity conversion technologies, and Acciona Energia will supervise the operation, construction and maintenance works at offshore sites.
