Kenya is anticipated to invest more on geothermal projects to realize its Vision 2030. Currently the country generates around 1,428 MW with its installed power generation to meet its peak power requirement of 1,200 MW.
The country suffers power cuts with inadequate rainfall and utilizes diesel generators to supplement its power production. To match the increased cost of diesel power production, often the power tariff is revised upward.
The country has identified the Menengai fields in Nakuru District with good geothermal power production. It is estimated that the power generated from the wells in the location can surpass the current power requirement of the country. The country has located nearly 14 exploring sites for power production and most of them are located in the Rift Valley area. The preliminary studies carried out at the locations indicate the possibility of generating over 7,000 MW of clean electric power.
The government on its part has formed a Geothermal Development Corporation, an exclusive agency under the government, to explore the possibility of geothermal power generation. The corporation is currently conducting field tests by utilizing its own equipment to save costs.
