Grupo Bimbo to Use Renewable Energy on Completion of Its Proposed Wind Farm

Grupo Bimbo, a baking food products manufacturing company in Mexico, has declared beginning the construction of its Piedra Larga wind farm in an arranged function. The function was attended by senior officials of the company, officials from Federal Commission of Electric Power and Energy Regulation Commissions and other government officials from the Oaxaca state.

The 90 MW wind farm to be located in Union Hidalgo, State of Oaxaca, is proposed with an investment of around US$ 200 million. When completed, the wind farm will provide power to 65 facilities, which includes production plants and operational centers and will almost meet 100% power requirement of the Grupo Bimbo in Mexico. The company has entered into a partnership with DEMEX, a Mexican wind farm development company and an associate company of Renovalia Energy, a Spanish company. The company has also extended invitations to Papalote Museo del Nino, Frialsa Frigorificos, and Grupo Calidra to join the project.

Daniel Servitje, CEO of Grupo Bimbo, said that his company has chosen to install wind power generation in tune with the commitment of the group to protect ecology and the security of the future generations. He added that the building of the wind farm forms the basis of the company’s effort to use and grow with nature and enabled the company to become the first among the food industry to change and move towards utilizing renewable energy sources. He stated that his company was striving for such an implementation for around 10 years and when implemented, it will help the company to improve the environment, save on energy and water, and reduce its carbon dioxide release, help in waste management and above all complete its accountability towards the community.
