SunEdison, an auxiliary of MEMC Electronic Materials, declared that its member company, MEMC Singapore, is collaborating with Flextronics, a known electronics manufacturing services (EMS) offering company, to manufacture solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at the latter’s production facility in Newmarket, Ontario. The manufacturing facility situated in York Region is anticipated to yield around 100 new jobs positions for the province.
As per the accord, Flextronics will manufacture MEMC trademarked solar panels, which will be utilized by SunEdison for its own solar photovoltaic projects. The arrangement will facilitate SunEdison and its project alliances to cross the 60% mandatory domestic product usage of the Ontario sponsored Feed-in Tariff Program (FIT) while sustaining the growth of SunEdison in the region. Flextronics has planned to commence its production in the second quarter of 2011. The current announcement is in sequel to SunEdison’s earlier declared programs to manufacture solar racking equipment in association with Samco Solar, a division of Scarborough, Ontario- based Samco Machinery.
Carlos Domenech, SunEdison’s President, said that the current proposal indicates its long-term investment plans for Ontario’s solar market. He added that his company looks forward for a good growth opportunity in providing high efficiency panels to meet the requirements of higher volume solar projects in the area.
Jason Gray, SunEdison’s Vice President and Country Manager, explained that his company chose to partner with Flextronics because of their shown devotion and support. He added that his company is dedicated to increasing the number of jobs in Ontario and unveiled the plans of the company to have 50 MW annual production capability in the beginning and increase it 200 MW over a period of time, thus creating more openings to accommodate a number of jobs in the province.
