AVACOS Solar Launches Green Residential Project in Toronto

AVACOS Solar has declared that the innovative green residential project in a mid-town Toronto neighborhood has reached completion.

This is the very first residential installation in the Canadian region to feature SANYO HIT Double modules in combination with DuROCK’s Tio-Coat roofing membrane along with a multitude of other green building technologies such as an integrated solar array. The pilot project tried out in the DuROCK headquarters was very successful and this led to its usage in the 4.6 kW solar installation.

The SANYO HIT Bifacing PV modules are capable of generating power from both the sides, giving a 30% higher output than the conventional one sided PV modules. This makes them perfect for porch coverings, canopies and carports. The DuROCK Tio-Coat is an ultra-strong white elastomeric urethane roof coating supplying 89% weather resistance and solar radiation reflectivity thus causing reduction in the usage of energy that is needed for the building in contrast to standard roof coverings. When combined, the solar array’s overall performance was enhanced because of the Tio-Coat’s cooling effect on the roof and also the added reflectivity that supplies light for the reverse side of the double sided modules.

According to SANYO Canada’s President, Koshi Terakawa, the company was thrilled to observe that this innovative solution had been extended to residential projects, which would be of great value to the end user. The project has been trying for LEED Platinum Certification and includes a number of other green technologies such as R-35 insulation for the outer walls, geothermal cooling and heating, low-flow bathroom fittings and reclaimed building materials.

Several companies were involved in completing this green project including William Dewson’s vision; Andrew Pike Interiors’ interior design, construction by South Park Design Build; and racking for the innovative solar project was provided by Schletter. According to Steven Costa, AVACOS Solar Energy’s Executive Director, progressive corporations and homeowners are gaining attractive benefits from their solar investments via the Feed-In Tariff Program conducted by Ontario, and this is in addition to the environmental benefits obtained from solar energy investments. Future plans include application of this integrated solution all over the rest of Canada.
