Veolia Energy North America Builds Landfill Gas-To-Energy Plant in Wisconsin

Veolia Energy North America announced that it is constructing its first landfill gas-to-energy plant at the Veolia Environmental Services North America Hickory Meadows landfill, in Wisconsin, the US.

The company has scheduled to start operation of the plant in summer 2011. The initial capacity of the plant will be 42,000 MWh per year, which can power 2,800 homes.

After completion, the total capacity of the project will be 4.8 MW. The plant will comprise three engine generator sets for landfill reciprocation, with each generator having a capacity of 1.6 MW. The generator sets are fueled only by landfill gas. The burnt landfill gas is captured and sent to the facility through the existing gas collection system. In the facility, the landfill gas will be converted into electricity.

For the project, Veolia Energy has signed a power purchase deal with the gas and electricity provider, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS). On completion of the project, WPS will buy the power produced from the plant as well as the renewable energy credits related to the energy output.
