North Myrtle Beach in South Carolina has installed an off-shore wind turbine, initiating a new source of green and renewable energy. Santee Cooper installed its first wind turbine at Oceanfront Park recently, as part of the city's green power program.
According to Councilman Greg Duckworth, who also happens to be a member of the North Strand Coastal Wind Team, they hope to see returns on their investment in about five to ten years, depending on the investment and wind speeds prevalent in the area.
The 2.4 kilowatt turbine generates electricity when wind speeds reach 8 miles per hour, reaching maximum output at 29 mph. The turbine will be able to generate enough to power a medium-sized refrigerator. It is equipped with a built-in meter to show real-time energy output. That data is fed to the internet and helps energy experts to learn how the turbine generates power. This will reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
A survey by the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, reported that 91% said they would support wind farms off the coast if it meant becoming energy self-sufficient. Coastal Carolina University studies reveal a great future for offshore wind energy in the state, where the strongest winds are near Georgetown and to the North. The turbine along with further studies will generate jobs, economic growth, and clean energy in the state.
