Renewable Energy to Power Philippine City

The Regional Development Council 10 recently granted permission to begin work on a six MW hydroelectric power plant, named the Limbatangon Hydroelectric Power Project, situated in the Philippine city of Cagayan De Oro.

The project was undertaken under the country’s medium term development plan, and the power so generated should meet the country’s growing demand for electricity.

Turbines Resources and Development Corporation, a private company, will undertake the project, which also comes under the purview of the department of energy, and will cost around P1.314 billion. The plant will come up on the left bank of the Cagayan de Oro River about 142 meters downstream from the meeting point of the Cagayan and Bubunawan Rivers. The project should help the country develop renewable energy that will enhance current energy supplies, while also giving employment and a source of income to the local population. The Cagayan de Oro City Council also supports the project since 2005, via the TRDC and has received an Environmental Compliance Certificate from the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in June 2010.
