ThyssenKrupp Steel Join Bayer's Sustainable Commercial Building Project

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG, headquartered in Duisburg, Germany, a global technology leader in the manufacture of high quality flat rolled steel, has joined Bayer MaterialScience's EcoCommercial Building Program. Through an interdisciplinary network of partners, this program offers the construction industry a comprehensive range of services and material solutions for building sustainable public and commercial buildings.

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe´s membership in the EcoCommercial Building Program intensifies collaboration between the steel company and Bayer MaterialScience in the field of highly functional sandwich panels for efficient heat insulation. These panels comprise a rigid foam core between two metal facings. ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe brings to the network its leading expertise in the use of these sandwich panels to insulate warehouses, cold storage facilities, administrative buildings and other industrial buildings. Bayer MaterialScience develops and produces polyurethane raw materials that lend the rigid foam core very good insulating properties.

"We want to become more established in the market with our solutions for the construction industry. To do so, we will be relying more in the future on long-term relationships with existing business partners and customers," says Thomas Polonyi, who is in charge of the construction elements business at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe. "In the future-oriented market of ecologically and economically intelligent construction, the best results are achieved in networks of specialized experts, who together develop custom services and solutions. We are therefore looking forward to working with the other members of the EcoCommercial Building Program to develop and implement innovations for sustainable buildings."

The custom prefabricated panels from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, with steel facings and a polyurethane rigid foam core, are suitable for walls, facades, ceilings and roofs. Apart from their load-bearing function, the sandwich panels fulfill the strict requirements imposed on sustainable and user-friendly structures, such as outstanding heat insulation, sound insulation, fire protection and optimum space utilization. What's more, innovative products, such as the Hoesch Matrix facade system from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, can be used for sophisticated architectural facade designs, which at the same time support cost-effective building solutions thanks to the comparatively easy assembly.

"The requirements for building materials used in commercial and industrial buildings are very stringent. Alliances between manufacturers, particularly as part of an integrated planning process like that used in the EcoCommercial Building Program, create synergies that give building decision-makers easy access to sensibly combined, cost-efficient material innovations," explains Frank Grunert, head of polyurethanes marketing for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and LATAM (Latin America) regions of Bayer MaterialScience.

"ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe is an excellent addition to the initiative's competence range," confirms Dr. Thomas Braig, head of the EcoCommercial Building Program for the EMEA region of Bayer MaterialScience. "With our new member, we can significantly expand the possibilities of our network in the areas of energy-efficient building envelopes and sophisticated facade design."

At BAU 2011, the world's leading trade fair for the building industry, experts from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe and Bayer MaterialScience will be presenting papers at the steel company's stand (No. 308 in Hall B2) on sandwich panels and the EcoCommercial Building Program.
