Xtreme Power, a producer and operator of integrated power management and energy storage systems for micro-grid and renewable energy applications, has been chosen as the storage supplier for Kaheawa Wind Power II (KWP II), a wind power project of First Wind.
Xtreme Power will install its proprietary 10 MW Dynamic Power Resources (DPR) for utility-scale power management and energy storage systems at the 21 MW wind power farm situated on the Island of Maui.
The KWP II is the fourth project for Xtreme Power in Hawaii since 2009 and it is Xtreme Power’s third installation with First Wind. The DPR was earlier deployed in First Wind’s adjacent wind farm, Kaheawa Wind Power and Kahuku Wind Power project on Oahu.
At the KWP II, the DPR will react quickly and automatically to discrepancies between the requirement of the Maui grid and the output of the farm. It either absorbs or delivers power as required to decrease the inconsistency, an inherent quality of renewable energy sources. This feature is vital to guarantee the control of large changes in the output of the wind farm.
First Wind will also use the DPR to offer the Maui Electric Company (MECO) with receptive backups to provide better incorporation of clean wind energy and for backing services including voltage and frequency control. The KWP II project is slated for completion in November 2011.
