First Wind, an independent wind energy company based in North America, which solely concentrates on the development, ownership and operation of wind energy generating projects, declared that its headquarters at 179, Lincoln Street in Downtown Boston has received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold certification.
The LEED certification is awarded for the 36,000 square foot work area of the company for installing energy efficient equipment, use of reclaimed materials and building materials of local manufacture. Some of the energy efficient standards followed in the construction of the building include usage of 100% energy certified equipment, incorporating Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood products to the level of 98%, re-use of 78% of construction materials that otherwise would have gone for landfills, utilizing nearly 42% of the building materials that are produced within 500 miles range of the project site. The First Wind’s headquarter building located in Downtown Boston, in Newton, MA is owned by Millennium and the LEED certification installations were completed through the joint efforts of WB Engineers, Dowling Houy, Commodore Builders, Gensler and Millennium Partners.
The Beaux Arts-style building built in 1899 underwent renovation in unison with the standards quoted by the U.S. Secretary of Interiors Standards for preserving the old buildings and holding LEED Silver certification. The building underwent remarkable changes after its purchase by Millennium in 2006 and is now complete with modern interiors, improved building systems, under-ground parking structure and a new access point and a lobby.
